    The ageing of Dutch fertility: socio-medical and policy implications.G. C. Beets, N. van Nimwegen, E. R. te Velde, C. M. Worthman, C. L. Jenkins, J. F. Stallings, D. Lai, E. Bonilla, A. Rodriguez & M. King - 1993 - Journal of Biosocial Science 25 (4):425-43.
SummaryIntense, sustained nursing lengthens inter-birth intervals and is causally linked with low natural fertility. However, in traditional settings, the effects of such nursing on fertility are difficult to disentangle from those of nutrition. Results from an prospective, direct observational study of reproductive function in well-nourished Amele women who nurse intensively and persistently but who also have high fertility are here presented. Endocrine measures show that ovarian activity resumes by median 11·0 months postpartum. Median duration of postpartum amenorrhoea is 11·3 months, (...)

Reuniting the Three Sisters: collaborative science with Native growers to improve soil and community health.D. G. Kapayou, E. M. Herrighty, C. Gish Hill, V. Cano Camacho, A. Nair, D. M. Winham & M. D. McDaniel - 2023 - Agriculture and Human Values 40 (1):65-82.
Before Euro-American settlement, many Native American nations intercropped maize (_Zea mays_), beans (_Phaseolus vulgaris_), and squash (_Cucurbita pepo_) in what is colloquially called the “Three Sisters.” Here we review the historic importance and consequences of rejuvenation of Three Sisters intercropping (3SI), outline a framework to engage Native growers in community science with positive feedbacks to university research, and present preliminary findings from ethnography and a randomized, replicated 3SI experiment. We developed mutually beneficial collaborative research agendas with four Midwestern US Native (...)

    Modelling the spatial patterning of teeth primordia in the alligator.P. M. Kulesa, G. C. Cruywagen, S. R. Lubkin, M. W. J. Ferguson & J. D. Murray - 1996 - Acta Biotheoretica 44 (2):153-164.
We propose a model mechanism for the initiation and spatial positioning of teeth primordia in the alligator, Alligator mississippiensis. Detailed embryological studies by Westergaard and Ferguson have shown that jaw growth plays a crucial role in the developmental patterning of the tooth initiation process. Based on biological data we develop a dynamic patterning mechanism, which crucially includes domain growth. The mechanism can reproduce the spatial pattern development of the first seven teeth primordia in each half jaw of A. mississippiensis. The (...)

The main experiments concerning the Aharonov–Bohm phase shifts, seen in an electron interference pattern, and their Boyer semiclassical explanations are reviewed. A new experiment is also presented which emphasizes the subtleties involved in the interpretations of the magnetic Aharonov–Bohm phase shift as a result of a non-dispersive or dispersive effect.

    Vertebrate genome evolution: a slow shuffle or a big bang?Nick G. C. Smith, Robert Knight & Laurence D. Hurst - 1999 - Bioessays 21 (8):697-703.
In vertebrates it is often found that if one considers a group of genes clustered on a certain chromosome, then the homologues of those genes often form another cluster on a different chromosome. There are four explanations, not necessarily mutually exclusive, to explain how such homologous clusters appeared. Homologous clusters are expected at a low probability even if genes are distributed at random. The duplication of a subset of the genome might create homologous clusters, as would a duplication of the (...)

On Being Reformed: Debates Over a Theological Identity.Matthew C. Bingham, Chris Caughey, R. Scott Clark, Crawford Gribben & D. G. Hart - 2018 - Springer Verlag.
This book provides a focus for future discussion in one of the most important debates within historical theology within the protestant tradition - the debate about the definition of a category of analysis that operates over five centuries of religious faith and practice and in a globalising religion. In March 2009, TIME magazine listed ‘the new Calvinism’ as being among the ‘ten ideas shaping the world.’ In response to this revitalisation of reformation thought, R. Scott Clark and D. G. Hart (...)

To Believe in Belief.Herman C. D. G. de Regt - 2006 - Journal for General Philosophy of Science / Zeitschrift für Allgemeine Wissenschaftstheorie 37 (1):21-39.
SummaryTake the following version of scientific realism: we have good reason to believe that (some of the) current scientific theories tell us something specific about the underlying, i.e. unobservable, structures of the world, for instance that there are electrons with a certain electric charge, or that there are viruses that cause certain diseases. Popper, the rationalist, would not have adhered to the proposed formulation of scientific realism in terms of the rationality of existential beliefs concerning unobservables. Popper did not believe (...)
